- The collection consists of two letters of appreciation by President John F. Kennedy and U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy to U.S. Marshal Ernest S. Mike, who was wounded at the University of Mississippi riot in 1962, and one newspaper clipping.

Biographical Note
A former Middleboro, Ky. police officer, Ernest S. Mike became a United States Deputy Marshal who worked out of the Lexington, Kentucky Marshal’s office. On the night of September 30, 1962, Mike was wounded in the line of duty on the campus of the University of Mississippi when a riot broke out protesting the integration of the campus by African American James Meredith.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of two letters by President John F. Kennedy and U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy as well as one newspaper clipping. All are related to U.S. Marshal Ernest S. Mike’s service and wounding during the 1962 integration riot at the University of Mississippi.

Acquisition Information
George Ready donated the material to Special Collections in May 2013 in honor of his father, William E. Ready, one of the few white Mississippi civil rights attorneys in the state during the 1960s.
