The collection contains correspondence of Richard C. Bridges, a soldier in the 11th Mississippi Infantry Regiment, Company A (commonly known as the University Greys) during the Civil War.

Biographical Note

Richard C. Bridges was a student at the University of Mississippi in 1861. After the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter, he joined the University Greys. Bridges fought with the Greys in Virginia, and sustained a fatal injury at the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864.

Scope and Content

The collection contains correspondence, chiefly written by Richard C. Bridges to family members while fighting with the University Greys in Virginia. Bridges's letters concern health, worries, holidays, lack of receiving letters, homesickness, battles and wound history.

Also included are a letter from fellow soldier J.T. Alford to Bridges; a letter from nurse Louisa A. Smith to Bridges's sister Matilda Norman after Bridges's death; and a letter from May Alford to Matilda Norman, concerning domestic matters.
