Biographical Note
The collection contains materials created by ancestors of former University of Mississippi
Chancellor J.D. Williams.
Sallie Pollock moved away from home in Kentucky to Ohio and Pennsylvania, among other
places, in the 1860s and her family, relatives, and friends wrote her letters to update
her on the recent events of the family. Sallie also received letters from her soon
to be husband John B. Williams, who was fighting in the Civil War. The collection
also touches on later parts of Sallie and John’s life in the late 19th century through
a few letters, tax receipts, and business agreements.
Scope and Content Note
The collection includes: invitations for Francis Virginia Pollock to balls and cotillions
in the 1830s; multiple letters from 1860-1865 from Sallie Pollock’s family telling
her how much they missed her and updating her on family events; letters to Sallie
Pollock from her friends updating her on their lives and begging her not to forget
them as friends; and a few letters from John B. Williams to Sallie Pollock, before
they got married, discussing the Civil War. Also included are tax receipts for John
Williams and the Heirs of David Pollock in the 1890s, several programs for entertainment
at the Beech Grove Sabbath School Union, and some undated letters to Sallie and some
undated notes and newspaper articles.
