Biographical Note

Ed Perry represented the Oxford district in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1968 until his retirement in 1999. During his tenure, he served as chairman of numerous committee, including Appropriations, Constitution, Municipalities, Judiciary “A,” and Judiciary En Banc. Members of the House elected Perry “Clerk of the House” in 2000.

Born in San Diego, CA, Perry graduated from University High School in Oxford, MS and the University of Mississippi. In 1967, he graduated from the University of Mississippi Law School and entered the legislative campaign that summer. Acclaimed as a powerful orator, Perry recited Judge N.S. “Soggy” Sweat’s famous “Whiskey Speech” at the Mississippi State Capitol Centennial Celebration in 2003.

Scope and Content Note

The Ed Perry Collection contains DVD recordings and a program from the Capitol Centennial Celebration in 2003. It also consists of eight pieces of correspondence from various state leaders to Dr. William J. Hooper, Director of the Mississippi Law Research Institute, who solicited tributes statements about Perry.

The one recording from this collection is available on DVD in the archives and as the Ed Perry Digital Collection at https://egrove.olemiss.edu/perry/. However, copyright concerns restrict access to onsite computer terminals in the J.D. Williams Library.

Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. Acquisition Information

Dr. William J. Hooper donated the Ed Perry Collection to the Archives and Special Collections in February 2006. Hooper added six photographs to the collection in June 2007.

Processing Information

Leigh McWhite completed processing the collection, 15 February 2006. Finding aid encoded by Jason Kovari, 7 July 2009. Description revised by Leigh McWhite, August 2010. EAD-encoded finding aid updated by Kathryn Michaelis, September 2011.

In 2010-2011, a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services enabled the archive to preserve and digitize all the recordings in the Ed Perry Collection. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed as part of this project do not necessarily represent those of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
