Biographical Note

Juliette Derricotte was born in Athens, Georgia on 1 April 1897. In 1918, Derricotte became the first woman trustee of Talladega College. She travelled across the U.S. and abroad on speaking tours in support of black colleges and education. She was a delegate at the convention of the World’s Student Christian Federation in 1924 and 1928. She became Dean of Women at Fisk University in 1929.

On 6 November 1931, while traveling to visit her mother in Dalton, Georgia, she and three students were seriously injured in an automobile accident. They were denied treatment at the local hospital which did not treat blacks. As a result, she died the next day, creating a national outrage. The death of Juliette Derricotte gained national attention and became the focus of Civil Rights activists.
