Biographical Note

The store’s founder was William Smith Neilson who moved to Mississippi in 1838 (only 2 years after Oxford was formally established by the MS Legislature), following the Indian Removal Period in the early 1830s, and Trail of Tears. Neilson’s first store was a small log cabin on the North side of the Courthouse Square. He stocked groceries, clothing, hardware, drugs, even coffins. The store was burned during the war in 1864, along with the rest of the Square’s structures, save one. Neilson's sons, Joseph and Halbert, developed several other stores in central MS and in 1892 Joseph came back to Oxford to run the store here after his father’s death. In 1897 the current store building was constructed and divided into departments, with a concentration on clothing. In 1914 Joseph Neilson took on two family members as partners, and in 1930 Will Lewis, Sr. was taken into the firm. Lewis took over ownership of the store in 1963, after other members of the firm sold their interest. Will Lewis, Sr. died on October 6, 1989 and the store is now run by his son and grandchildren.
