Biographical Note

Dr. Edmund Keiser earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree from Southern Illinois University. He earned his doctorate from Louisiana State University. He began working at the University of Mississippi Department of Biology in 1976. Dr. Keiser served as the chair of the department from 1976 to 1987. He continued his research in wildlife biology by working for and with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP), and NASA. He helped demonstrate the profound influence of amphibians and reptiles on woodland and aquatic ecosystems and on other species populations. He officially retired in 2005 and was awarded professor emeritus. He still teaches the occasional class and conducts research. There was a $100,000 faculty support endowment established in his name by an anonymous donor.

Scope and Content

157 pgs. Keiser’s doctoral dissertation from Louisiana State University. It is a monographic study of the neotropical vine snake, Oxybelis aeneus (Wagler).

1.3 Amphibians, Reptiles of Mississippi Floodplain, 1972 

Scope and Content

151 pgs. Keiser’s report on the distribution and ecology of the amphibians and reptiles of a selected portion of the Mississippi river floodplain from the Gulf South Research Institute.

1.4 Herpetofaunal Survey of the Atchafalaya River Basin Vol. I, 1976 

Scope and Content

406 pgs. Vol. I of Keiser’s herpetofaunal survey of the Afchafalaya river basin. He examines the crocodilians, caudate, anura, sauria, and serpents. Helped in part by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Lafayette Natural History Museum (National Information Technical Service, U.S. Department of Commerce).

Scope and Content

405 pgs. Vol. II of Keiser’s herpetofaunal survey of the Afchafalaya river basin. He examines serpents, chelonian, accounts, habitat summaries, as well as management considerations and recommendations.
