Biographical Note

James O. Eastland received an appointment to the U.S. Senate in 1941 upon the death of Senator Pat Harrison. Elected in his own right in 1943, Eastland remained in office until his retirement in 1978. He chaired the powerful Judiciary Committee from 1956 until 1978 and was the second highest ranking Democrat on the Agriculture and Forestry Committee at the time of his retirement.

Lee Annis attended Hanover College for his undergraduate education and received a master’s degree and doctorate in History from Ball State University in Maryland. He is chair of the History Department on the Rockville campus of Ball State University. His research has focused on congressional biographies, publishing Howard Baker: Conciliator in an Age of Crisis in 1994 which has since gone into a second, revised edition; Tennessee Senators, 1911-2001: Portraits of Leadership in a Century of Change co-authored with Senator William H. Frist; and  Big Jim Eastland: The Godfather of Mississippi in 2016.
