Biographical Note
Bern Keating was born in 1915 in Quebec, and Marion Frances “Franke” West one year later in McGehee, Arkansas. Keating grew up in Chicago and New York and began college at New York University. After a year at NYU, he transferred to the University of Arkansas, where he and West met. They were married in 1939 and had two children, John Geoffrey and Kate Maulding.
Bern Keating began his career as a journalist in print and radio, working in Florida, New York, and California. He served in the Navy during World War II, and in 1946, the family moved to Greenville, Mississippi. Bern set up a photography studio there, where Franke also worked as a photographer. Keating gained national recognition when his photographs appeared in Collier’s alongside an article by Quentin Reynolds about African American landownership in Mississippi, and he began contributing photographs to many major American magazines. In the early 1960s, Keating shifted the focus of his work from photography to writing. He published hundreds of articles—in Town and Country, Smithsonian, Travel and Leisure, Life, Look, National Geographic, Reader’s Digest, Saturday Evening Post, Playboy, and The New Yorker—and over two dozen books. The subject of his work ranged from biography to history to travel writing. Keating also claims to have published several books under one or more pseudonyms.
Franke Keating’s photography also appeared in national magazines like Smithsonian, National Geographic, and Travel and Leisure. She and Bern often collaborated on projects—such as the books Florida and Mississippi. Bern has noted that some photographs attributed to him were actually made by Franke.
Bern and Franke Keating received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995 from the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters. Bern died in 2004, and Franke in 2011.

Scope and Content
Collection consists of photographs taken by Bern and Franke Keating over the course of their long career as photographers and authors. Images include Mississippi scenes, as well as images related their work in other regions of the United States and abroad.
Arrangement
This finding aid covers the first 13 boxes of the Keating Collection which have been processed to date. The collection and finding aid are arranged alphabetically by subject of image.
