Historical Note
The "Memories of Mississippi" essay contest, held in 1994, solicited writings from persons age 60 or older who
lived in north Mississippi between 1929 and 1941. The essays contain personal reflections
of their authors on topics such as farm life, the economy, family life, education,
and various others. The contest was sponsored by the University Museums at the University
of Mississippi; the Mississippi Humanities Council; the Friends of the Museums; the
Graduate School of the University of Mississippi; Northeast Community College; Itawamba
Community College; Tate County Historical Society; Coahoma Community College; and
the H.W. Durham Foundation.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains 163 essays received as entries in the "Memories of Mississippi" essay contest.
