Louis Lowry McInnis Collection (MUM00591). The Department of Archives and Special Collections, J.D. Williams Library, The University of Mississippi.

Historical Note
Louis L. McInnis was a student at the University of Mississippi from 1872-1875. In 1876, he served as a tutor of chemistry and natural history at the University. After leaving Oxford, McInnis took a job in College Station, Texas as a profesor at the Agricultural and Mechanical College.
As a student at the University of Mississippi, McInnis was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. The majority of correspondence in this collection comes from former fraternity brothers. Many of the correspondents continued to work at the University of Mississippi after graduation as tutors in the Preparatory Department. Their letters are replete with commentary on students, faculty, the administration of the University, and campus and town life. One correspondent discusses the typhoid fever epidemic of 1878 in several letters to McInnis. The collection contains a broadside in memorial to several students of the University who died during the outbreak.
Perhaps the most interesting singular piece of information in the collection comes from a tutor at the University, writing to McInnis in 1879 (2-2). According to J. W. Kilpatrick, the University of Mississippi awarded the first doctoral degree in the late 1870s, and not in 1893, the date commonly accepted. The first doctoral degree was conferred by the Board of Trustees, without the support of the faculty, on R. H. Loughbridge. Loughbridge had done no course work towards the degree. The action of the Board, apparently, caused great dissatisfaction among faculty and students, who felt the value of a degree from the University severely diminished. Loughbridge, according to the Alumni Directory, graduated with a B. S. in 1871, but the directory does not reflect the awarding of a Ph.D. from the University.
