World War II Memories Collection (MUM00485). The Department of Archives and Special Collections, J.D. Williams Library, The University of Mississippi.

Historical Note
The University of Mississippi Museums organized an exhibition highlighting the hopes, fears and expectations native Mississippians experienced during World War II. After the 2001 exhibition was disassembled, the University Museums donated some of the showcased materials to the Department of Archives and Special Collections at Ole Miss. As a result, the majority of the correspondence, documents and publications once included in the exhibition are now preserved and available for future generations.
Included in the collection is the extensive correspondence between the Dean of Men, Dr. R. M. Guess, and soldiers who were once students at the University. As Dean of Men from 1937 to 1956, Dr. Guess diligently maintained contact between the University and the men overseas. The result is a fascinating glimpse into the complex relationship between a soldier and the home he left behind. In addition, the collection also includes information about the World War II memorial built by the University of Mississippi Alumni Association in the early 1950's. Determined to recognize the sacrifices former students at the University of Mississippi made during World War II, The Alumni Association in connection with Mrs. Martha Wilburn Hooker, erected a monument to all Ole Miss students killed during the war. Included in the donation made by the University Museums, is the correspondence between the University and the families of students lost during the war. The letters are a reminder of not only the Nation's sacrifices for the war effort, but the high price many American families paid for freedom.
