Biographical Notes

Sarah Rice

Sarah Rice (b. 1909), the daughter of a schoolteacher mother and a minister father, grew up in a family of eight children in rural Alabama. She published her autobiography He Included Me: The Autobiography of Sarah Rice in 1989. The autobiography tells the story of her life as an African-American woman in Alabama in the 20th century.

Louise Westling

Louise Westling transcribed and edited He Included Me: The Autobiography of Sarah Rice. Westling is a professor of English at the University of Oregon. She has authored several books including  Sacred Groves and Ravaged Gardens: The Fiction of Eudora Welty, Carson McCullers, and Flannery O’Connor and  The Green Breast of the New World: Landscape and Gender in American Literature.
