Historical Note
In January 1961, James Howard Meredith applied for admission to the University of Mississippi, receiving a letter of rejection on 25 May 1961. Following eighteen months of escalating legal battles, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of Meredith on 10 September 1962, permitting his admission to the university.
Meanwhile, the Governor of Mississippi, Ross Barnett, staged elaborate opposition to integration of the state's educational institutions. Through strong segregationist rhetoric and a vehemently pro-states' rights platform, Barnett crystallized support from most of the state's elected officials. Building on 1956 legislation creating the Sovereignty Commission, Barnett advocated open defiance to encroachment of Federal laws on Mississippi institutions.
James Meredith arrived on the Ole Miss campus on 30 September 1962. During that evening, a riot erupted in which a white crowd attacked United States Marshals sent to protect Meredith. The arrival of federal troops ended the violence in the early hours of 1 October 1962; two bystanders were killed, 206 marshals and soldiers were wounded and 200 people were arrested during the riot. Meredith officially registered for classes 1 October 1962 becoming the first African-American student at the University of Mississippi.
Scope and Content Note
Materials in this collection consist of telegrams sent to and sent out by the Oxford, MS Western Union telegram office during August-October 1962. Many of the telegrams relate to the integration of the University of Mississippi. There is only one from James Meredith, which is to the Registrar Robert Ellis. The telgrams related to the integration are mostly addressed to Governor Barnett and Chancellor J.D. Williams and both support and denounce the integration. There are also several annotated news stories sent by reporters during September 1962.
Folders without item-level description contain telegrams unrelated to the integration.

Folders designated as "Noteworthy Telegrams" pertain to James Meredith & the integration of Ole Miss and are organized by the date and time of day. The general telegrams do not pertain to integration.
