Biographical Note
Patrick D. Smith was born in Mendenhall, Miss., on 8 October 1927. Smith earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Mississippi, the latter in 1959. He moved to Florida in 1966 and has lived there ever since.
Smith is the author of seven novels: The River Is Home; The Beginning; Forever Island; Angel City; Allapattah; A Land Remembered; and The Seas That Mourn. He has also authored a short story collection, A White Deer. Smith is co-author of the non-fiction book The Last Ride and author of the non-fiction book In Search of The Russian Bear.
Smith has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize three times, in 1973 for Forever Island; in 1978 for Angel City; and in 1984 for A Land Remembered. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1985.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains typed manuscripts of six of Patrick D. Smith's novels and his non-fiction work In Search of the Russian Bear. Also included are journals and magazines containing stories by Smith; a folder of Smith's speeches; a copy of a thesis about Smith; and some correspondence.
