Scope and Contents Note

The collection consists largely of letters, documents, and photographs that document several generations of the Simmons family's history in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, 1840 to 1992. Also housed in the collection are genealogical materials, including numerous lineage charts, for various branches of the Simmons family in Mississippi, Texas and Oklahoma.

One of the most interesting features of this collection are the letters in Boxes 3 and 4 between Douglas and Lillie Simmons, and their families and friends. Douglas and Lillie Simmons, married in March 1919, were the parents of Calvin R. Simmons and his older brother John Douglas. The earliest letters (Box 3) were written in 1920 when Lillie and Douglas were awaiting the birth of John Douglas. The letters contain wonderful insight into early twentieth-century views on childbirth and childrearing. Douglas and Lillie's letters lapse from 1920 to 1922.

In 1922, the letters resume and the reader finds Lillie confined to the Mississippi State Sanitorium for treatment of tuberculosis (Box 4). By 1922, Douglas and Lillie have had their second child, Calvin. When Lillie is hospitalized, Douglas is forced to send his children to live with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Simmons in Pontotoc, Mississippi. Douglas, a physician, lived in Gunnison, Mississippi, a small Delta town in Bolivar County.

Lillie's condition, despite her claims to the contrary, gets progressively worse in the early months of 1923. In April, from the home of her parents in Athens, Tennessee, Lillie writes to Douglas, "If you think Ashville [sic] will do me any good you come on now as I am awful sick." Lillie's shaky handwriting attests to her critical illness. Enclosed with the letter to Douglas is a newspaper clipping -- Lillie Simmons' obituary.

Boxes 1 and 2 contain correspondence, organized chronologically, dating from 1861 to 1992. Many of the letters in Box 1 and most of the letters in Box 2 contain notes on family genealogy. Boxes 3 and 4 contain the correspondence of Douglas and Lillie Simmons. Box 5 contains miscellaneous documents, including land deeds, bills of sale, wills and invoices. Boxes 6 and 7 contain genealogical materials for the various branches of the Simmons family: Beckham, Burgess, Humble, Kimball, Longest, Moore, Conner, Perdue and West. Oversize genealogical charts can be found in Box 10. Box 8 contains miscellaneous materials, including report cards, funeral notices, a recipe book, several folders of clippings, picture postcards of Pontotoc landmarks, and a University of Mississippi commencement program from 1913. Box 9 contains printed volumes of Pontotoc history, Beckham family history, and several University of Mississippi publications.

The collection also contains a number of photographs, almost all of which are identified. The photographs, along with two albums of tin types, are located in Collections Photographs Boxes 20 through 22. Photocopies of the original photographs can be found in Box 8 of this collection.
