Abstract
Collection content contains research files of Dr. David G. Sansing for numerous books, textbooks, and articles he wrote on history related to the state of Mississippi and the University of Mississippi. It also includes speeches, lecture notes, photographs, slides, oral history recordings, and artifacts.

Biographical Note

Born in Greenville, Mississippi in 1933, David G. Sansing spent two years in the Army from 1951 to 1953 before pursuing a career in teaching. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in History from Mississippi College in 1956 and 1959. In 1960, Sansing began teaching at Gulf Coast Community College while pursuing his doctorate in History which he obtained from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1969.

Sansing taught at the University of Mississippi from 1970 to 1994 and wrote several books and textbooks on the history of Mississippi and the University of Mississippi. He was a popular professor and often requested as a speaker by off campus groups. Sansing died on 6 July 2019.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains correspondence, notes, source materials, photographs, manuscript drafts and other materials relating to the following books and textbooks by David G. Sansing: The University of Mississippi: A Sesquicentennial History (1999);  A History of the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion (1977) with Carroll Waller;  Making Haste Slowly: The Troubled History of Higher Education in Mississippi (1990);  Mississippi Life: Past and Present (1980) with John Ray Skates;  Mississippi: Its People and Culture (1981); and  Mississippi: The Study of Our State (1993) with John Ray Skates. In addition, it includes research material related to his 1969 University of Southern Mississippi dissertation “The Role of the Scalawag in Mississippi Reconstruction.” The collection also includes 24 cassette tapes containing oral interviews with Mississippians as well as slides and photographs used in his lectures, speeches, and publications.

The Sansing family donated additional manuscript material in 2019 which appears in Series 20 through 24 and includes speeches, lectures, and research files on the Confederate flag, the Mississippi state flag, Sansing's textbook A Place Called Mississippi (2013), and hi  s last book The Other Mississippi: A State in Conflict with Itself (2018) among other topics.
