Historical Note

Jack Raymond Reed, Sr. born in Tupelo, Mississippi, 1924, worked hard both within his community and throughout the state, to ensure that as many people as possible had access to a decent level of public education, irrelevant of race or economic status. Reed believed that a good education and proper community development was the corner stone of a successful future for Mississippi. He attended Vanderbilt University (class of 1945) and New York University from where he obtained his MBA, before returning to Tupelo to help with the family businesses. Reed was so committed to his family business and the Tupelo community that, other than for college, the only other time he lived elsewhere was during WWII when he spent time abroad with the Special Intelligence Service of the United States Army, decoding Axis communications.

Once settled back in Tupelo, he married Frances Purvis Reed and they had four children together. This did not slow Reed down however, as he pushed the importance of education and became a prominent figure in the Mississippi business community even being elected as president of the Mississippi Economic Council in 1963. Reed used this platform to call for order and nonviolence during the integration of Mississippi schools, particularly following the Ole Miss crisis that left two dead. Reed never faltered in his quest for better race relations, community development, and education, in Mississippi, often citing that in order to be a good citizen and good Christian, he must work hard to improve the lives of his fellow citizens and those less fortunate than himself.

Reed worked alongside governor William Winter and was appointed chairman of the Special Committee on Public Education, and then as the State’s first chairman of the State Board of Education. Reed even ran as the GOP gubernatorial candidate in 1987 only barely falling short with 47 percent of the vote. This loss did not stop Reed however, and he continued his work in business, community, and education development, eventually becoming Chairman of the National Advisory Council on Education Research and Improvement, appointed by George H.W. Bush. He has been honored in the Mississippi Business Hall of Fame and a community/education development award has been named after him and governor William Winter by the Mississippi Association of Partners in Education. Jack Raymond Reed, Sr. passed away in 2016, aged 91.
