Historical Note

The Piney Woods Country Life School (or Piney Woods School) is a boarding school founded by Laurence C. Jones in Rankin County, Miss., in 1909. The school was founded with the goal of providing educational opportunities to rural African Americans. Piney Woods School received a charter from the state of Mississippi in 1913, and it remains in operation. The school is coeducational and historically, but not exclusively, African American. The curriculum emphasizes occupational training and hands-on learning.
