Scope and Contents Note
Collection composed of materials pertaining to blues-related projects: a film, Maxwell Street Blues (1980), and a book, Mother of the Blues: A Study of Ma Rainey (University of Massachusetts Press, 1981.) Included are photocopies of research materials about classic blues singer Gertrude "Ma" Rainey (1886 1939), four notebooks of research notes, negatives of illustrations used in the hook, transcriptions of song lyrics, and information concerning copyright registrations and renewals. Also included are taped interviews about Ma Rainey with musicians Clyde Bernhardt, Thomas Dorsey, Sam Chatmon, and Sunnyland Slim.
An addition to the collection received in 1987 consists of papers related to the writing and publication of Mother of the Blues. These include correspondence with other blues authorities (among them: R.M.W. Dixon, Karl Gert zur Heide, Bernard Klatzko and Rosetta Reitz) and with granting agencies and prospective publishers. Correspondence with the University of Massachusetts Press, which published the book in 1981, concerns editorial matters and the production and marketing of the book. Lieb actively assisted the press with marketing, and the papers include her notes and correspondence concerning publicity tours to Denver, San Francisco and New York in 1981 and to Chicago in 1982. Tape recordings include dubs of Ma Rainey's records obtained for research purposes from collectors, and radio interviews with Lieb concerning Ma Rainey and the hook. One folder contains materials related to a possible reissue of Ma Rainey songs by VJM. (A research cassette of some of the tapes is shelved in Box 1)
