Biographical & Historical Note
George Street, a native Mississippian, spent the majority of his life in Mississippi. His received his academic training in Mississippi as well, including his B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Mississippi. He was employed by the University in February, 1949, and retired in January, 1985. During his tenure he held the following positions, Supervisor of Student Housing, Director of Social Affairs, Assistant Dean of Men, Director of Placement and Financial Aids, Director of Development, Director of University Relations and others. He created and served as administrator of the first office of Placement and Financial Aids and administered the Carrier and Jones Scholarships. In 1993, he was elected to the University of Mississippi Alumni Hall of Fame.
Scope & Content Note
The material in the George M. Street Collection is divided as follows:
The George M. Street Collection: Two boxes of papers related to Street's administrative duties at the University of Mississippi.
The George M. Street Collection - Accretion 1: This accretion consists of correspondence, tapes and other materials documenting the career of George Street at the University of Mississippi. It also includes materials pertaining to the Meredith Crisis, Robert F. Kennedy's speech on campus and civil rights, generally. There is some genealogical information, typed transcriptions of the Civil War correspondence of John Berryman Crawford, and a folder of WWII correspondence between Dean Malcolm R. Guess and his student, Edward Lockard. "Correspondence" refers to personal letters as well as interdepartmental memoranda and other printed materials.
Arrangement
This finding aid describes two units: The George M. Street Collection, consisting of Street's original donation of materials to the University; and Accretion 1, consisting of additional material received at a later date. These two units were processed at different times and are described separately in the Container List below.
