Biographical Note
Lealon E. Martin was born 31 May 1910 in Natchez, Miss. He earned a B.A. from Millsaps College, where he served as editor of the student newspaper, in 1931. Martin taught briefly at Hazlehurst High School before becoming a reporter and assistant editor at the State Tribune newspaper in Jackson, Miss. Martin went on to work for several other publications and the Associated Press. From 1943 until 1948 he served as Assistant Chief of Venereal Disease Technical Services and Education at the Public Health Service in Washington, D.C. Martin worked for the National Heart Institute and the National Institutes of Health in various capacities until his retirement in 1973. Martin published multiple articles on health-related topics and environmental conservation. He authored two books, Conquest of Disease (1961) and Mental Health/Mental Illness: Revolution in Progress (1971).
Scope and Content Note
The collection chiefly contains writings of Lealon E. Martin (including manuscript drafts of novels, stories, and nonfiction works) and related items. Also included are clippings from and issues of newspapers of which Martin was editor.
