Biographical Note

Clare Leslie Marquette was born January 1, 1904 in Kendall, Wisconsin. He received both his Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. After completing his graduate studies, Marquette taught at Oconto High School from 1928 to 1930 and at Appleton Senior High School from 1930 to 1936. He began his professional career in higher education at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where he taught from 1940 to 1946.

After leaving Northland College, Marquette and his wife, Lena Mitchell, moved to Mississippi where he assumed a faculty position at the University of Mississippi in the Department of History. Professor Marquette was admired by his students, but at the same time, he was perceived as a controversial and ultra-liberal individual by some in the campus community. Because of the position he held on various issues, Marquette often became the target of harsh criticism in student publications.

Marquette experienced the turbulence of the 1960s while on faculty at UM. In September 1962, James Meredith became the first African-American to integrate the university. In October 1962, Marquette's American history course was the first class Meredith attended. Professor Marquette remained on faculty until his retirement in 1972. He kept an ongoing relationship with the university and was later named Professor Emeritus of History.

C.L. Marquette died at his home in Louisville, MS in June 2004. He was 100. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena, but to preserve her memory, Professor Marquette established a scholarship endowment fund prior to his death to be awarded to a deserving student.
