Historical Note

A nonpartisan, national organization, the League of Women Voters (LWV) "encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government and influences policy through education and advocacy." Educational service involves the presentation of information about elections, the voting process, and issues. Although it does not support or oppose any candidate or party, the LWV does provide a forum where all candidates may state their positions on the issues. The LWV also advocates for policies in the public interest.

When the Nineteenth Amendment became ratified in 1920 granting women the right to vote, the Mississippi Woman Suffrage Association reorganized itself as the League of Women Voters of Mississippi. Over the next decade, the number of local chapters grew and members sought not only to prepare women to vote but also encouraged women's participation in the political process by holding public meetings, issuing publications, and questioning candidates on the issues. In addition to voter education, the organization also advocated protective legislation for women and children.

However, the Mississippi organization disappeared from all records of the national League of Women Voters by 1932. The state division did not experience resurgence until the 1950s. By that time, the national organization had begun to address the issue of African American civil rights. State membership totals declined in the latter half of the 1950s despite the Mississippi League's avoidance of segregation and civil rights. The group instead focused on jury service for women, reapportionment of state districts, and support for the United Nations. Numbers declined even further when the national organization adopted a civil rights position in 1964. The Mississippi League, meanwhile, worked to keep the public school system open, and began enrolling African-American members. After years of avoidance, the LWV of Mississippi tentatively began to urge fair voter registration and voting law compliance. This stance ultimately acquired the group a subversive reputation among the state's white segregationist population.

The national League of Women Voters sponsored televised presidential debates in 1976, 1980, and 1984. In 1988, the LWV withdrew its affiliation in reaction to efforts by party nominees to dictate the terms of the debate. However, it continues to hold debates and candidate forums at the state and local levels, as well as providing voters' guides that outline candidate's positions on issues.
