Biographical Note

Seymour Lawrence (1926-1994) was an independent book publisher who helped launch the careers of many important authors during the second half of the twentieth century. While a student at Harvard University, Lawrence served as editor and publisher of Harvard's literary journal, Wake. After graduation Lawrence worked for several large publishing houses, including the Atlantic Monthly Press and Alfred A. Knopf, before founding his own independent imprint, Seymour Lawrence, Inc., in 1965. Lawrence began his imprint with only one title, J. P. Donleavy's The Ginger Man, but his publishing list eventually grew to include such prominent authors as Richard Brautigan, Tim O'Brien, Kurt Vonnegut, Katherine Anne Porter, Pablo Neruda, and others. Lawrence and his wife, Merloyd, successfully operated their imprint for over 25 years, independently and in association with Dell Publishing Company and its hardcover division, Delacorte Press. Economic difficulties at Dell eventually led Lawrence to move the imprint to E. P. Dutton, and then to Houghton Mifflin in 1988. Lawrence died from complications relating to a heart attack in Englewood, Fla., in 1994.
