Historical Note

According to The Memphis Commercial Appeal (Mid-South, 14 Nov. 1982), the John F. Johnson journals document the history of the town of Greensboro, MS, a town 30 miles west of Starkville MS. The town "...died by 1885. A combination of forces brought about her demise: politics, the Civil War, crime, arson, and lack of postwar railroads." The history of the town had been difficult to tell due to the lack of extant official records, but Johnson's papers help to address that need.

Also according to the same Commercial Appeal article, "John Forsyth Johnson, a Greensboro citizen who was born in 1825, was a farmer, tax assessor, and post-master who kept diaries from 1857 to 1912."
