Biographical Note

James M. Howry, (J.M. Howry) the patriarch of this collection was elected Circuit Court Judge in 1841 and was one of the original trustees of the University of Mississippi. His son, Charles B. Howry, (C.B. Howry) was born in Oxford and obtained his law degree from the University of Mississippi in 1867. He was a Confederate veteran, Assistant Attorney General during the Cleveland administration and an Associate Justice of the U.S. Court of Claims; he, too, served as a trustee of the university.

Charles B. Howry's son, Lucien B. Howry (LBH), received his bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi in 1890. He is best described as an historian and genealogist. Charles B. Howry, Jr. (CBH), another son of C.B. Howry, was an executive copy writer in advertising firms.

Charles Howry's daughters, Elizabeth Butler Howry and Mary Harris Howry were born to his second wife. As young adults, Elizabeth (EBH) was trained as a vocalist and Mary (MHH) as a dancer with the Denishawn Dance Company. EBH and MHH were civic-oriented and socially active in Washington D.C. and the surrounding areas. EBH organized the first entertainment circuit for the U.S. troops in WWI, was appointed by president Eisenhower to the committee on the National Cultural Center, was president of the Washington Humane Society, and organizer and president of Washington Opera Society. MHH was a member of the Denishawn Dance Company which toured the orient and she later founded the Washington Junior League.

Scope and Content Note

Collection mainly personal correspondence among C.B. Howry and his family and between daughters Mary and Elizabeth. Although there is business correspondence pertaining to the dissolution of C.B. Howry and his advertising business. Includes essays, articles and diaries from various family members. There are also several letters to J.M. Howry from James K. Polk, Jefferson Davis and Varina Davis.
