Biographical Note
George William Healy, Jr. was born in Natchez, Miss., 22 September 1905. Healy worked for several Natchez newspapers while a student at the University of Mississippi. He began working as a reporter at the New Orleans Times-Picayune in 1926 and eventually worked his way up to editor of the paper, from which post he retired in 1972. Healy also served as director of the Times-Picayune Publishing Corporation.
Healy held several government-related posts during World War II. He was Special Representative for the U. S. Office of Censorship, 1941-1942; a consultant, Office of War Information, 1943; and director, Office of War Information domestic branch, 1944-1945. Healy was personally acquainted with several presidents, notably Richard Nixon, Lyndon B. Johnson, and John F. Kennedy.
He was the author of an autobiography, A Lifetime on Deadline: Self-Portrait of a Southern Journalist (1976).
Healy died 2 November 1980 in New Orleans.
