Biographical Note

Theora Hamblett was born in Paris, Mississippi in 1895 and moved to Oxford, Mississippi in 1930. In her fifties, after a career as a school teacher, Hamblett began her painting career. Her work is often associated with the primitive or naïve school, since she had little formal training. According to her Last Will and Testament, there are four categories of paintings: visions, dreams, old home memories, and children’s games and other paintings and drawings.
