Biographical Note

C.E. Colbert graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1916. He and his wife owned a grocery store in Trebloc, Miss. His great-grandfather was George W. Campbell, an early settler of Noxubee County, Miss.

Custodial History

The papers in this collection were handed down to C.E. Colbert via his great-grandfather George W. Campbell, an early settler of Noxubee County, Miss., and a witness to the signing of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek.

Letter from Henry Clay to "Dear Sir," 13 September 1842 

Scope and Content

Letter is accompanied by a card that reads: "If you have a copy of this letter, you should know that it is a lithographic fac-simile and has no value. The paper bears no watermark, the "ink" is gray instead of black or brown, and on the left edge is a distinct mark of the glue used to hold the plate in a volume, The fold in the letter is at the proper place for the sheet to fold for inclusion in a volume."
