Biographical Note
Heinrich Hauer "Henry" Bellamann was born 28 April 1882 in Fulton, Mo. He attended the University of Denver. Later he pursued musical studies in New York, London, and Paris. In 1907 he married Katherine Jones of Carthage, Miss.
For seventeen years Bellamann was Dean of the Arts at Chicora College for women in Columbia, S.C. During this period Bellamann also served as editor of the Book and Music page of The State, one of South Carolina’s most widely-read newspapers. In 1924 he moved to New York to teach music and to serve as chairman of the examining board of the Julliard Musical Foundation, for which he also was instrumental in assembling the first faculty. Bellamann successively served as acting professor at Vassar College and Dean of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he edited the musical publication Overtones. In 1920 Bellamann published a book of poetry, A Music Teacher’s Note Book, and in 1926 he published a novel, Petenera’s Daughter.
Bellamann's novel Kings Row, a study of life in a midwestern town, was greeted with enthusiasm when it appeared on 1940. The novel became a bestseller and later was made into a movie. Other novels by Bellamann include Crescendo Interlude (1928), The Richest Woman in Town (1932), The Gray Man Walks (1936), Floods of Spring (1942), and Victoria Grandolet (1943). He was at work on a sequel to Kings Row at the time of his death on 16 June 1945. The sequel was completed by Katherine Bellamann and published under the title Parris Mitchell of Kings Row (1948).
In 1925 De Pauw University conferred on Bellamann the honorary degree of Doctor of Music. France made him a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1931.
Katherine Jones was born in Carthage, Mississippi, 7 October 1877. At Chicora College she taught voice while her husband served as Dean. Her first novel, My Husband’s Friends (1931), is a fictitious account of the life of a woman married to a brilliant university scientist. The author’s experiences undoubtedly colored the book, which is as deeply penetrating a psychological study as she produced. Later novels include the collaborative Parris Mitchell of Kings Row (1948) and The Hayvens of Demaret (1951). This last book is a set in Mississippi, to which she returned as a widow.
A prolific poet, Katherine Bellamann became an important voice in Mississippi poetry circles during her later years. She was president of the Mississippi Poetry Society. In 1953 she won the Lyric Sonnet Award and, in 1954, the Allen Swallow Publications Award. She died 8 November 1956. A collection of her poems titled A Poet Passed This Way was published in 1958 by the H. Bellamann Foundation.
