Death comes to all, including presidents. In a few cases, this loss is the result of assassination during their tenure in office. Among the items on display are a memorial photo card for William McKinley, shot by an anarchist in 1901, and an AP teletape from a Lexington, Mississippi radio station that relates minute-by-minute updates on the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy.
However, most presidents depart life peacefully after retirement. The program for Woodrow Wilson’s 1924 memorial service on view below contains a detailed description of the sequence of events that transpire on these occasions. It outlines where dignitaries sit, what time the Capitol doors open, and when the Marine Band plays.
