Historical Note
Founded in 1895 in Oxford, Mississippi and federated in 1898, the Browning Club is
a club for women to expand their knowledge of literature and culture, including music
and the arts. The club is a social organization, but through fundraisers, donations
to both local and world organizations and causes, and petitions they have become involved
in community and political affairs.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains information about history, membership, meetings, programs,
reports to Mississippi Federation of Women’s Clubs, and yearbooks. The history dates
back to the club’s founding in 1895. The history delineates the purpose and goals
of the founders and how subsequent members have contributed to and bettered the club.
There is a list of all the known members of the club from its founding, officers,
member contact information and birthdays, and meeting attendance. A majority of the
proceedings of each meeting have been recorded in the minutes. The minutes provide
a detailed account of issues discussed and information about upcoming or past events.
The programs include activities held, papers read, and plays that were performed.
There are several condensed lists of programs dating back to the clubs founding. The
reports to the Mississippi Federation of Women’s Clubs provide information about dues
paid and activities of the club and its committees. The yearbooks which were produced
almost annually provide an overview of the club’s activity each year.
