Biographical Note
Joseph M. Howorth
Joseph M. Howorth practiced law in Greenville, Mississippi with his wife. In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed
Lucy Somerville Howorth to the Board of Veterans Appeals, and her husband accompanied her to Washington, DC. In 1954, the
couple returned to Mississippi and established a law practice together in Cleveland. Joseph M. Howorth died in 1980.
James O. Eastland
James Oliver Eastland was born on 28 November 1904 in Doddsville, Mississippi. He attended the University of Mississippi
(1922-1924), Vanderbilt University (1925-1926), and the University of Alabama (1926-1927). After admission to the state bar
in 1927, he practiced law in Forest, Mississippi and served for a time in the Mississippi House of Representatives. In 1941,
U.S. Senator Pat Harrison of Mississippi died in office, and Governor Paul B. Johnson Sr. offered the temporary appointment
to Eastland. Eastland successfully campaigned for the senate seat in 1942, remaining in Congress until his retirement in
1978.
Scope and Content Note
Three of the letters from Eastland and the copy of the letter from Howorth predate Eastland’s first tenure in the U.S. Senate.
The 1927 letter indicates Eastland’s early interest in a political career. Eastland sent the fourth letter in October 1941
upon returning to Mississippi.
