Biographical Note

On July 22, 1999, in Birmingham, Alabama, author and activist John Egerton convened a two-day meeting of 50 people who lent
their names to a non-profit organization dedicated to the documentation and celebration of the diverse food cultures of the
American South. The Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi agreed to act as the incubator
of the SFA and provided start-up capital, earned from sale of the Center-researched and written cookbook A Gracious Plenty:
Recipes and Recollections from the American South. The institute contines to research and sponsor programs, field trips, publications,
and oral histories. For more information about the SFA, please visit: http://southernfoodways.org

Arrangement

The Southern Foodways Alliance Collection has been arranged into seven main series: organizational records, documentary projects,
events, publications, ephemera, photograhs and audiovisual materials, and digital materials. Series one, organizational records,
contains five subseries, three of these subseries contain correspondence and other collected organization materials from the
founder, John Egerton, as well as main staff John T. Edge, SFA Director, and Amy Evans, oral historian. Other subseries contain
history of the organization, including board minutes and early articles and general corresponence. Series two contains documentary
projects, broken into two subseries, oral history and film projects. The largest collection is oral history projects, these
are then arranged by project and state, with further identification of contents such as research, transcripts, release forms,
and photographs. Series three, events, contains three subseries: SFA sponsored events, SFA co-sponsored events, and events
for the SFA. Sponsored events is the largest of these subseries divided into two groups: symposia and other sponsored events
such as fieid trips, camps and divertissements. These are all arranged by event and year, and contain administrative/planning
materials, articles, menus and various collected ephemera. Series four, publications, contains newsletters and publications
created by SFA, along with notes used for these publications. Series five, ephemera, contains three subseries: materials created
by the SFA, Collected materials about the SFA, and miscellaneaous general collected materials. A bulk of these materials are
magazine and newspaper articles about the SFA or southern food, as well as a variety of recipes seperated by type of food.
Series six contains photographs and audiovisual materials. A bulk of the photograhs are in box fourteen and are not identified.
Audiocasettes in this collection are mostly available via transcripts found by project and state in the documentary series
or within the SFA electronic files accessable via hard drive. Series seven, digital materials, contains CD’s of oral histories
and a hard drive that contains oral history programs- audio, correspondence, release forms, and photographs.
