The Dr. and Mrs. Dunbar Rowland Collection consists mainly of correspondence between Dr. Rowland and his family, work associates,
and friends. The remainder of the collection is made up of notes, speeches, and tributes by and for Dr. Rowland.

Biographical Note

Born in Oakland, Mississippi, Dunbar Rowland was the first director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History
in 1902. During his service as director (a position he held until his death), Rowland established a museum in the new Capitol
building in 1903 and secured portraits of prominent Mississippians for the state Hall of Fame. Rowland also travelled extensively
to examine French, England, and Spanish archive holdings that document the early history of Mississippi. In 1906, Dunbar Rowland
married Eron Opha Gregory, a native of Okolona, Mississippi. A historian in her own right, Eron worked closely with Dunbar
at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. After Dunbar’s death in 1937, Eron served as interim director of the
state archives until a successor could be named. Afterwards, Eron maintained the Rowland Historical Library at her home in
Jackson, Mississippi.
