Biographical Note

Born in 1939 in Holly Springs, Mississippi, Dr. Hubert H. McAlexander is an alumnus of the University of Mississippi. He has
been a professor of English at the University of Georgia since 1974. He is the author of several works including:
The Prodigal Daughter: A Biography of Sherwood Bonner (LSU, 1981; 1999 new edition with University of Tennessee Press) and
 Peter Taylor: A Writer’s Life (LSU, 2001). He is also editor of
  Conversations with Peter Taylor and Critical Essays on Peter Taylor. In 2000 Dr. McAlexander published his history of Marshall County, Mississippi entitled,
 Southern Tapestry: Marshall County, Mississippi, 1835-2000.

Scope and Content Note

Contains materials related to the history of Holly Springs, Marshall County, Mississippi. Subjects include structures, streets,
family genealogies, Civil War, Airliewood, cemeteries, American Indian tribes, and neighboring towns. Includes pamphlets,
brochures, newspaper clippings, maps, excerpts from books, articles, photographs, electronic media, and other related documents.

Series I (Original Collection) : consists primarily of materials relating to Hubert McAlexander’s work to Marshall County in general. Includes photocopies
of historic materials, diaries, correspondence, newspaper clippings, postcards, and other related documents. Folders are arranged
in the original order.

Series II (2002 Accretion) : materials consist of letters, photographs, documents, newspapers and clippings relating to Hubert McAlexander’s work on Marshall
County, Mississippi. Folders are arranged in the original order.

Series III (2004 Accretion) : contains the original diary, along with transcriptions, of Harriet Pegues of Marshall County, Mississippi.

Series IV (2009 Accretion) :

Subseries 1 (Buildings and Streets) contains historical research conducted by Hubert McAlexander on houses, buildings, streets,
and builders in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Includes maps, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, copies of deeds, census records,
correspondence, research notes, and other related documents.

Subseries 2 (Churches and Schools) contains historical research conducted by Hubert McAlexander on churches, religion, and
schools in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Includes correspondence, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, research notes, and other
related documents.

Subseries 3 (Families) contains genealogical research conducted by Hubert McAlexander on families in Holly Spring, Marshall
County, Mississippi. Includes newspaper clippings, copies of deeds, census records, correspondence, research notes, diary
and book excerpts, and other related documents.

Subseries 4 (Correspondence) contains correspondence to and from Hubert McAlexander. Subjects include Marshall County and
Holly Spring research, collection donation, and personal correspondence. Includes emails, letters, cards, postcards, newspaper

Subseries 5 (Newspapers) contains newspaper clippings and research on newspapers from Holly Springs and Marshall County, Mississippi
conducted by Hubert McAlexander.

Subseries 6 (Historical Research) contains research topics related to Holly Springs and Marshall County, arranged alphabetically
by subject, along with other subjects such as the Civil War, Airliewood, cemeteries, American Indian tribes, and neighboring

Acquisition Information

Collection was donated by Dr. Hubert McAlexander. In August 2002, Dr. McAlexander deposited the second installment of his
collection. In July 2004, Dr. McAlexander deposited the third installment of his collection. In 2009 an additional accretion
was donated.
