Biographical Note
Robert L. Oakman III was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1941 but grew up in Clarksdale, Mississippi. In 1959, Oakman graduated
high school and entered the University of Mississippi, where he majored in mathematics and minored in physics and French.
Oakman graduated in 1963 and went on to attend graduate school at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Indiana.
He then joined the faculty at the University of South Carolina, where he taught for thirty-three years. Upon retiring, Oakman
became the Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of South Carolina.
Scope and Content
The Robert L. Oakman III collection contains material from Oakman’s time at the University of Mississippi, including classwork,
football programs, and programs from other University events. There also news clippings related to Mississippi’s Miss America
winners. The collection also includes material related to author James Dickey.
