Biographical Note
Donna Bess Bailey Dye, originally from Coffeeville, Mississippi, attended the University of Mississippi and took classes from
Dr. Charles Noyes, but ultimately graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1963. She later married
Brad Dye, a politician from Jackson, Mississippi, who became state treasurer and eventually lieutenant governor. Donna Bailey
Dye became the museum division director for the Mississippi Department of Archives and History at the Old Capitol Museum in
Jackson, Mississippi, as well as the president of the Mississippi Historical Society. She also helped create the Eudora Welty
Foundation while remaining an active volunteer in the Junior League of Jackson.
Born in Natchez, Mississippi on 19 July 1917, Charles E. Noyes attended Rozelle Grammar School and Central High School in
Memphis, Tennessee. He received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Missouri and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas.
Noyes taught at the University of Tennessee and the University of Missouri before his tenure at the University of Mississippi.
From 1942 to 1946, Noyes served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Noyes came to the University of Mississippi in 1953 with a focus
in the Restoration and 18th century English literature. Noyes served as Provost in 1963-1964 and later served as acting Vice
Chancellor, Associate Vice Chancellor and Director of the Summer Session. He retired from the University of Mississippi in
1982. During the 1962 University Integration, Noyes composed speeches for Chancellor J.D. Williams. Noyes was a benefactor
of the J.D. Williams Library and membership chair of Friends of the Library support group. Noyes died 30 August 2008.
