The materials that comprise this collection were transferred from the care of David Wharton at the Center for the Study of
Southern Culture to Greg Johnson in the Department of Archives and Special Collections.

Annual additions are expected to this collection for the duration of the North Mississippi Music Project.
Oral histories originally recorded on analog tape have been digitized for preservation and access.
The American Music Archive at the University of Mississippi sponsored the Field School for Cultural Documentation program
of The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. These Field School programs at the University of Mississippi
focused on teaching participants how to properly collect oral histories, interview subjects, operate audio recording equipment,
create audio logs, etc. Library of Congress members Michael Taft, David Taylor, and Guha Shanker, along with David Wharton
from the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi ran the program. Student participants
were from Southern Studies, music, and history. The major focus of the field schools was on music in and around Oxford, Mississippi.
