Abstract:
William Wert Cooper, Jr. was a Senior majoring in Commerce at the University of Mississippi when James Meredith enrolled at the University of Mississippi. Cooper took these black and white and color photographs on campus and in the town of Oxford during the events surrounding Meredith’s enrollment.
Quantity:
Fifteen 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ black and white photographs, five 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ color photographs, 20 corresponding negatives.

Biographical/Historical Sketch
William Wert Cooper, Jr. graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1963. Cooper, from Clarksdale Mississippi, was a Senior studying Commerce when James Meredith enrolled at the University of Mississippi. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Scope and Content Note
This collection of 20 chronologically arranged photographs includes images of damage on the University of Mississippi campus after the riot that took place prior to James Meredith’s enrollment. The collection also contains images of Federal troops removing furniture students placed on campus roads to block their movements and images of the troops on the square in downtown Oxford.
