Annie McGehee Collection (MUM00290). The Department of Archives and Special Collections, J.D. Williams Library, The University of Mississippi.

Historical Note
Annie McGehee was originally from Como, MS. She was a student or perhaps a teacher at Huntsville Female College in Huntsville, AL, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The collection consists of correspondence sent to Annie McGehee in the late nineteenth and twentieth century from her friend Theo in Memphis and other acquaintances from Como, MS. Theo’s letters cover topics such as popular music of the period; the World’s Fair in St. Louis, MO; the progress of Theo’s music students; and trips to New York. There are several letters sent to Annie McGehee from friends in Como and from the Huntsville Female College expressing their condolences for the loss of Annie’s father. Edward Waller, McGehee’s fiancé from Como, provides the bulk of the correspondence in the collection. Taylor worked as a traveling salesman for a Memphis, TN company called Chism. Taylor’s letters recount his sales trips to Texas, as well as his desire to move to Texas and open a merchant store in El Paso. Edward’s letters also discuss the difficulties of traveling due to yellow fever the and quarantines of local towns, including Como. Other topics discussed in the collection include religious conversion, the ethnic population of El Paso, and the World’s Fair in St. Louis, MO.

Scope and Contents Note
The collection of correspondence sent to Annie McGehee is organized chronologically into three boxes. Box 1 contains correspondence from 1890 to 1892 provided by Annie’s friend Theo in Memphis, TN. Box 2 contains letters written to Annie by Edward Taylor while on sales trips in 1898 to 1899. Box 3 contains correspondence from 1904 to 1946 as well as undated and miscellaneous materials, including receipts for an engraving and a lab report for Mrs. Rosa Irby from Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan.
