Historical Note

James Boyce Henderson was one of eight children born to Jesse Louis Henderson and Molly Longest. He was born at Chiwapa, Pontotoc County, Mississippi on September 29, 1893. Little is known about his early life, save that he grew up at Chiwapa. He participated in WWI, being sworn in on Thursday, May 17, 1917. He was sent to France and by the time he reached the front lines the church bells signaling the armistice were ringing. He came back to the University of Mississippi for the 1919-1920 year and went to the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary soon thereafter. In 1923 Henderson was forced to leave the seminary due to his public questioning of the student clubs on campus. The time period between 1923 and 1927 is unclear, but by November of 1927 Henderson was working as a teacher under the Department of the Interior in Kanatak, Alaska. He spent nearly twenty years in this position and married Carrye Adele Rose (date unknown). They returned to Pontotoc by the 1950s and lived there until his death in 1982.
