Abstract: Carolyn Haines was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She earned a B.S. in journalism
from the University of Southern Mississippi and an M.A. in English with an emphasis
in creative writing from the University of Southern Alabama. Her first novel, Summer
of Fear, was published in 1993. She has since published over 20 books, including a
series of novels about Southern belle detective Sarah Booth Delaney and a work of
nonfiction, My Mother’s Witness: The Peggy Morgan Story, about a young white woman
caught in a violent world of racism and brutality during the Civil Rights movement
and its aftermath. The collection contains nine boxes of Haines’s manuscript material,
correspondence, and book jacket art. The collection also includes 6 binders of 35mm
negatives Ms. Haines took in the 1970’s as a photographer for publications including
the Mobile Press Register, the Mississippi Press, the Hattiesburg American, and the George County Times.

Biographical Note

Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on May 12, 1953, Carolyn Haines graduated from high
school in George County. She received a B.S. from the University of Southern Mississippi
in Journalism and a M.A. in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing in 1985 from
the University of Southern Alabama. Carolyn Haines’s first published novel, Summer
of Fear, appeared in 1993, followed by Summer of the Redeemers appearing in 1994.
Her popular detective series featuring the feisty Southern belle detective Sarah Booth
Delaney began in 1999 with the publication of Them Bones; Haines continues to add
to the series as of 2011. In 2003, Haines published My Mother’s Witness: The Peggy
Morgan Story, a non-fiction account of a young white woman caught in a violent world
of racism and brutality. Haines has written numerous books under the pseudonym Caroline
Burnes.


Scope and Content Note

Nine boxes of manuscript material, correspondence, and book jacket art from the collection
of noted Mississippi-born mystery author Carolyn Haines. The collection also contains
6 binders of 35mm negatives Ms. Haines took in the 1970’s as a photographer for publications
including the Mobile Press Register, the Mississippi Press, the Hattiesburg American, and the George County Times.
