Biographical Note

Ellen Douglas (the pen name of Josephine Ayres Haxton) was born in 1921 in Natchez,
Miss. Douglas grew up in small towns throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas.
She graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1942. She has authored eleven
books, including novels, short-story volumes, and nonfiction. Douglas has served as
writer-in-residence at Northeast Louisiana University, Tulane University, and the
University of Mississippi, and has taught at various other institutions, including
the University of Virginia and Millsaps College.

Scope and Content Note

The collection chiefly contains annotated drafts (typed and handwritten) of nine of
Douglas’s books. Also included are notes written by Douglas pertaining to the books;
research materials; galley proofs; and printers’ typescripts. Box 36 contains drafts
of and notes on various stories, published and unpublished. Box 37 contains book reviews,
essays, and other writings by Douglas, some of which appear in published periodicals.
