Biographical Note
Dr. James J. Cooke, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Mississippi,
wrote extensively about Modern European History, specifically about French Imperial
in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He served many years in the United States
Army and participated military operations in Desert Storm. He retired from the Mississippi
Army National Guard with the rank of Brigadier General in 1995 and retired from the
University of Mississippi History Department in 1999.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of many different drafts of Cooke’s essays and publications.
Also included is an extensive collection of his correspondences, both personal and
professional. The collection also contains a copy of a dissertation by Thomas M. Verich,
former University Archivist at the University of Mississippi.
