Biographical Notes
The following biographical information is paraphrased from the Preface to the Blanton-Smith Letters by Georgie Blanton Finlay
Cooper, 25 August 1986.
John Blanton & Martha Belton “Patsy” Whitaker
John Blanton married Martha Belton “Patsy” Whitaker in Camden District, South Carolina. Blanton, originally from Virginia,
moved to Kentucky with Patsy, circa 1800, where he was involved in land speculation. Eventually, the family established a
plantation, Blantonia, near Red Lick, Mississippi, south of Vicksburg.
Eliza C. Blanton & William Tunstall
Daughter of John and Martha Blanton, Eliza C. Blanton married William Tunstall. The two settled in the region of Claiborne-Jefferson
Counties, Kentucky. During the War of 1812, Eliza spent considerable time in South Carolina.
William Whitaker Blanton & Harriet Byron McAllister
William Whitaker Blanton, son of John and Martha, married Harriet Byron McAllister in Walnut Hills, Mississippi in 1818. The
couple moved to Washington County and obtained a plantation through land grants under Andrew Jackson’s administration. The
plantation, also named Blantonia, was located near the current city of Greenville, Mississippi.
Harriet Byron McAllister’s father, John Keith McAllister, was a native of Lisburn, County Antrim, Ireland. McAllister family
legend states that he joined the British Army during the American Revolutionary War. Following capture at the Battle of Cowpens,
South Carolina, he entered the merchantile business in Charleston, South Carolina. McAllister moved his family to Greene County,
Georgia, where Harriet was born 17 April 1798.
Orville Martin Blanton & Martha Rebecca Smith
Orville Martin Blanton, son of Harriet Bryon McAllister and William Whitaker Blanton, was born 22 July 1828 in Washington
County, Mississippi. O.M. Blanton was educated in Kentucky and Baltimore, receiving his Doctor of Medicine. On 7 February
1854, he married Martha Rebecca Smith, daughter of Dr. George Smith and Mary Jane Greenway of Live Oak Plantation, Warren
County, Mississippi.
Following their marriage, Blanton and Smith settled on Belle Air Plantation, Washington County, a gift of Harriet Byron McAllister.
During the Civil War, Orville Blanton served as a surgeon to the First Louisiana Artillery during the seige of Vicksburg.
Following the war, Blanton cultivated a large bee ranch and left managing the planation to his wife, Martha. Martha, a committed
Anglican, helped establish the Episcopal Parish of St. James, Greenville, Mississippi; Martha died 14 September 1897. Dr.
Blanton lived until the age of 83, survived by only one of his daughters, Georgie Greenway Blanton Finlay.
William Campbell Blanton
William Campbell Blanton was the son of William Whitaker Blanton and Harriet Byron McAllister and younger brother to Orville.
Educated in Kentucky and at Princeton University, William married Georgie Smith, sister to Martha Rebecca Smith, Orville’s
wife, with whom he settled on Greenway Plantation. During the Civil War, he served in the 28th Mississippi Cavalry, Company
D. He died in Fredricksburg, Virginia at the age of 38. Georgie remarried A.M. Kirk in 1880.
Patty Anderson
John and Martha Blanton’s daughter, Catherine, married John Lewis Martin, a landowner in Louisville, Kentucky and Bolivar
County, Mississippi. Catherine and John had a daughter, Nancy Oliver Marin, who married John H. Anderson. Nancy and John had
a daughter, Patty Anderson, and a son, Orville Anderson who married Caroline Timberlake and died while visiting Europe with
Patty. Patty married Richard Ten Broeck.
George Smith & Mary Jane Greenway Avery
Born 28 November 1797 in Dinwiddie Couty, Virginia, George Smith received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania
in 1824. He married Mary Jane Greenway Avery in Virginia. Mary Jane Greenway Avery was the great-granddaughter of Dr. James
Greenway of Dinwiddie County, Virginia. A botanist at the College of William and Mary, John Greenway was an avid Tory during
the American Revolution. Greenway’s daughter Mary married Braxton Robinson after the death of her first husband, Robert Hicks.
The couple had Jane Robinson, who later gave birth to Sally Wyatt.
George and Mary had Martha Rebecca Smith in Greensville County, Virginia. The family moved to Live Oak Plantation, Warren
County, Mississippi. An oppoonent of secession, Dr. George Smith opened his home as a hospital for Confederate and Union wounded
soldiers. Following the war, both he and his daughter, Martha Rebecca Smith, filed claims with the U.S. Government over material
loss.
Scope and Content Note
Binder 1 contains user copies of the original letters housed in Boxes 1 and 2. Many of these letters are from Martha Rebecca
Smith, wife of Dr. Orville Martin Blanton.
Binder 2 contains photocopies and transcriptions of additional Blanton-Smith correspondence of which originals are not owned
by the University of Mississippi. This material involves John Blanton, Martha Belton Whitaker and their descendents. Earlier
letters in this binder were written by Eliza C. Blanton Tunstall. Many other letters were written by Patty Anderson; in her
correspondence, “Cousin Orville” refers to Dr. Orville Martin Blanton while the other “Orville” refers to her deceased brother.
“Little Mamie” refers to her neice, her deceased brother’s daughter. Patty’s references to her “Aunt” refer to Harriet Byron
McAllister Blanton (later Theobald).
