Biographical Note
Orma Rinehart “Hack” Smith was born on 4 September 1904 in Booneville, Mississippi to Jefferson Davis and Lena Rinehart Smith.
The family moved to Corinth when he was two. Smith graduated from Corinth High School in 1921 and began attending the University
of Mississippi where he played football and was a charter member of the Alpha Tau Omega chapter on campus. After three years
in undergraduate classes, Smith enrolled in the Law School and graduated in 1927. The annual that year stated that “He is
the maker of friends and will someday be one of Mississippi’s leading barristers.” Smith maintained a close tie to his alma
mater, serving as president of the Alumni Association in 1961-62 and received the Ole Miss Law Alumnus of the Year in 1979.
After graduation, Smith established a law practice in Corinth where he served as city attorney. In 1958, he formed a law firm
with his son, Smith & Smith. Smith was a member of the Alcorn County Bar Association; member of the Board of Mississippi Bar
Commissioners, 1960-1962; president of Conference of Local Bar Association 1961-1962; president of the Mississippi State Bar
Association, 1965-66; and a member of the American Bar Association. Twice, Smith acted as temporary circuit judge.
President Lyndon B. Johnson nominated Smith to the U.S. District Court of Northern Mississippi on 17 July 1968. Former college
roommate and chair of the Judiciary Committee, U.S. Senator James O. Eastland appeared on his behalf at the nomination hearing,
and Smith was confirmed by the Senate on 25 July 1968. He received his commission on that same day. Smith’s residence remained
in Corinth but he traveled frequently across northern Mississippi to hold court. He assumed senior status on 16 August 1978
and terminated his tenure on 5 July 1982 due to death. He died of complications from an earlier heart surgery. His colleague
U.S. District Judge William Keady stated “A prodigious worker, Judge Smith had many opinions published in the law reports.
He was courageous and played no favorites in the courtroom. Foreign counsel and civil rights attorneys were quite impressed
by his fairness and proper decorum, unaffected by the nature of his case.”
Smith married Margaret Elizabeth Fernandez on 17 June 1930, and they had a son, Orma R. Smith Jr. Judge Smith was a Mason
and member of the Corinth Rotary Club; deacon and member of the board of trustees of the First Baptist Church in Corinth;
a trustee of the Corinth Separate School District, 1940-1955; and on the board of directors of both the National Bank of Commerce
of Corinth and Fidelity Federal Savings and Loan Association of Corinth.
Scope and Content
The Orma R. Smith Collection contains twelve subject folders primarily related to the University of Mississippi and the Mississippi
State Bar. The remainder consists of his chambers papers (or case files). Although some of the contents may duplicate the
official court records of the cases (such as motions, briefs, and opinions), chambers papers can provide valuable insight
into court deliberations and the internal workings of the judiciary since they may include material created prior to the issuance
of a judicial decision, such as case notes, draft memoranda and opinions, correspondence with colleagues, and research.
Although a few of the case files are from the early 1970s, the bulk date from 1978 through 1981. Prior to his agreement in
1979 to donate his papers to the University of Mississippi, Judge Smith discarded case files as they became obsolete.
Arrangement
The Subject Files in Series 1 are arranged alphabetically. Series 2 through 6 are comprised of case files which are arranged
in sequence by case identifier. Series 3 through 6 represent the different geographical districts in which Judge Smith held
court. Photographs are in Series 7.

Copyright Restrictions
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions
of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a
photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used

No further additions are expected to this collection.
Acquisition Information
Orma R. Smith donated his papers to the University of Mississippi Law School in 1979 and continued to transfer material through
1981. In 2004, the university administration transferred responsibility of Orma R. Smith Collection to the Archives & Special
Collections.
Processing Information
The archives preserved the integrity of the individual case files and labeling as created by Judge Smith’s office, but rehoused
the contents into new folders and boxes.
In 2016, Law School intern William Wilkerson and student assistant Alicia Dixon compiled brief descriptions for each case
file, and Political Papers Archivist Leigh McWhite wrote the introductory notes and encoded the finding aid.
