Symposium and Ceremony held by the Department of Justice on July 15, 2003. Items from a display “The Kennedy Justice Years 1961-1964” as well as the Symposium and Ceremony honoring the Integration of the University of Mississippi held on July 15, 2003. Scope and Contents Note

On November 20, 2001, the Main Justice building was renamed the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building in honor of the former Attorney General. Part of the celebration included an exhibit The Kennedy Justice Years 1961-1964. The exhibit covered the dedication of the building, Civil Rights, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. In connection with identifying persons in photos, a former U.S. Deputy Marshal, Graham E. Same, shot in the throat in the line of duty during the integration of the University of Mississippi in 1962, expressed interest in visiting the exhibit. The Department of Justice took the opportunity to honor Same as well as all of the Deputy Marshals present on the evening of September 30, 1962, for their courage and bravery with medallions presented by the Attorney General.

The collection includes items from the exhibit The Kennedy Justice Years 1961-1963, as well as from the Symposium and Ceremony honoring the Marshals who were in Oxford, MS on September 30, 1962. Specifically, the collection contains 2 VHS tapes (tape 1 of Symposium and tape 2 of Ceremony) of the Symposium and Ceremony held on July 15, 2003; 1 DVD of both the Symposium and Ceremony of July 15, 2003; invitations and programs to the event of July 15, 2003; copies of letter President Kennedy sent to U.S. Marshal Denzil Staple; copy of photos of Attorney General Robert Kennedy; copy of photo of U.S. Deputy Marshals with RFK that went to MS; copy of photo of marshals assigned to James Meredith; copy of photo of U.S. Deputy Marshal Graham Same w/ RFK in Attorney General’s office; copy of statement issued by RFK on incident in Oxford, MS; copies of speech of James Meredith given on July 15, 2003 autographed.
