Request A Class

  • If you are teaching a General Education course to first year students, a librarian will contact you early in the semester to set up a librarian led instruction session.
  • To set up any other librarian led instruction session, please contact the subject liaison to your department: Subject Liaisons
  • To request a session provided by Archives and Special Collections please contact Dr. Jennifer Ford.

Session Basics

Library instruction sessions are customized to your teaching goals and the research needs of the students. Hands-on instruction is one of the best ways to help students learn.

Librarian subject specialists help students locate resources relevant to their assignment and provide time for student hands-on learning.

First Year students all learn the same basic library skills as part of the FYII: First Year Instruction Initiative. Additionally all library sessions can include:

  • Advanced database searching in subject specific databases, e.g. American: History and Life, JSTOR, ERIC, CQ Researcher.
  • Advanced Keyword and Subject Searching and navigating complex research resources using controlled vocabulary.
  • Finding Peer Review and Scholarly Articles and explaining the peer review process.

  • We prefer that classes are brought to the library after the first week of the semester.
  • Provide the librarian with your session objectives and with a copy of the class assignment.
  • Be sure students have chosen their assignment topics and the session is close to the time the assignment is due.
  • Accompany your class to the Library.

Non-University Requests for Library Instruction Policy

High Schools
Only assignment related classes will be scheduled; no general tours. The teacher/parent to student ratio should be 1 to 10.

Middle Schools and Elementary Schools
Using the Public Library is recommended, as it is age appropriate for elementary and middle school students. No tours of the main library are offered for elementary or middle schools due to safety reasons. Exceptions for 8th grade classes with research assignment should be directed to Alex Watson.
